Dodson Shop Fitters
ENVIRONMENTAL MANAGEMENT SYSTEM

Introduction

Dodson Shop Fitters (DSF) has introduced an Environmental Management System (EMS) based on the international environmental management standard, ISO 14001. It is our systematic approach to incorporating environmental considerations into every business decision. The EMS is closely integrated with Health & Safety legislation.

This is a living document that will be revised as required when processes change or significance can be reduced. DSF has detailed risk assessments but this document will provide the generic ethos for each aspect.

Aim

Our aim is ensure that key environmental hazards arising from business activities are identified, assessed and managed in proportion to the risks that they present.

Qualifications

In order to produce an effective EMS, Mike Dodson has successfully completed the following Institution of Occupational Safety & Health (IOSH) and Institute of Environmental Management & Assessment (IEMA) courses:

    Introduction to Environmental Protection
    Environmental Protection Law and Policy
    Environmental Protection Waste Management
    Environmental Protection Land and Water
    Environmental Auditing Certificate (IEMA accredited)
    Risk Assessment in the Workplace
Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) Assessor

Targets

Targets have been set for all our significant impacts and apply to all our operating procedures.

Monitoring Implementation

DSF will undertake a comprehensive environmental audit of its business procedures on a regular basis. However, customers are invited to make suggestions which will be thoroughly investigated and where necessary changes to procedures implemented.

Law

DSF comply with all environmental legislation, but the majority of their processes are covered by the following main Acts:

    Environmental Protection Act 1990
    Water Resources Act 1991
    Environment Act 1995
Pollution Prevention and Control Act 1999

Waste

We have a Duty of Care to correctly dispose of all waste resulting from refurbishment of premises and proactively encourage the sorting of recyclable materials on site to reduce costs to the client.

Waste will be segregated into waste bins (or bags) marked ‘wood’, ‘plastic’, ‘metal’, ‘hazardous’ and ‘domestic’. There will normally be 3 rigid plastic bins plus strong plastic bags depending on the range of waste produced during any given shop refurbishment contract. Employees will be trained in the reasons behind segregating at source and encouraged to use the system.

Land, Air and Water

DSF will take all reasonable precautions to avoid any foreseeable contamination of Land, Air and Water (DSF is not located above a major aquifer or controlled waters system).

DSF recognises that wood dust resulting from sawing, planing and sanding is dangerous to health and will provide for air filtration systems in it’s workshop. Protection from dusts produced on sites will be provided and worn. The public will be protected from harmful dusts by physical segregation of works or extraction

Where possible DSF will use paints and other finishes with low or nil Volotile Organic Compounds (VOCs).

Noise

DSF operate in a remote workshop reducing potential for nuisance to neighbours. Any complaints resulting from day to day procedures will be addressed.

When operating on retail premises every effort will be made to reduce noise and vibration nuisance during unsociable hours.

Paper

Paper is to be re-used where possible.

Where possible billing and payments will be made on-line to avoid paper billing.
